Many people have thought of diesel cars and trucks as noisy, smelly and slow. But diesel technology has quietly advanced over the past 10 years. Now, diesels are a very competitive alternative to traditional gas powered vehicles. Unfortunately, some states restrict the sale of diesels due to stricter emissions standards. In other areas of the U.S. diesels are offered in a few passenger cars (even one luxury car) and a host of trucks. Here are a few of the advantages that diesels present for car buyers:
• Significantly higher fuel mileage
• Longer range between fill-ups
• Increased torque at lower rpm — better for towing
• Less consumption of natural resources
• In some cases, diesel fuel is less expensive
This is a segment of the market that is likely to expand in the near future. People considering diesel as an alternative to gasoline powered cars should put aside their previous assumptions and research the current state of these vehicles.
