Anybody Have this Problem?

A friend with an 03 Performance Deville (DTS) has had the car cut out several times. He wrestles it to the shoulder and it starts just fine and might run a week until it happens again. The dealer has replaced his fuel pump twice and it still happens. I would think that the computer would tell the dealer what has happened but all the dealer does is replace the fuel pump. Has this happened to anyone on this list? It seems to me that I read about it in the past.

The current issue has an article on cars their readers won't purchase again. 46% of them won't purchase another Cobalt sedan. I can't figure out what is wrong with the Cobalt. I've rented a lot of compacts and find that most of them are pretty much alike. Some have fancier interiors but I have had nothing but good luck with my 09 LT1 coupe. I understand that the 05's and 06's had small problems -squeaks, small warranty things and most of the bugs are gone now. Of course everybody loves their Japanese cars -typical CR readership.

Cobalt is cited as a car that nearly half of the respondents say they won't buy again. I can't figure out what is so bad about the car. CR was talking about the sedan, not the coupe. I prefer the big doors on the coupe and the styling. That's why I bought one. The sedan feels cramped but really there isn't much difference -it is mostly psychological because of the smaller doors. I've rented sedans and they were perfectly fine. I don't know what CR readers expect. The car gets good mileage, has a great engine for a 4 with very good pickup and passing power, and costs little to maintain as compared to a Japanese car. The old Cavalier was OK too.

Let me understand your predicament: You were insulted when they offered you 16K in trade for your obsolete truck. If you consider a year and a half old PU truck obsolete. The dealer was offering me low book on a full priced Denali. That is an insult to my way of thinking. I proved the value of the truck by finding a buyer willing to pay a decent though not what I would consider a great price for the truck. It was not a roll bar. It was a locking rollup bed cover. The truck was always garaged and did not have a single scratch. It did not get near the mileage EPA suggests. It did much better on a trip through NM and CO. Highest was 22 MPG. Around San Diego I averaged about 16.5 MPG. By the way I got $16,500 for my 7.5 year old Suburban that cost me $35k in 1998. It all adds up to the deterioration of GM from the dealers all the way to the CEO. Bailing them out is throwing good money after bad. I feel bad for those that bought GM stock at $75 and now it is worth about $3.50.

Nothing's static and you just can't just say guvmint never repeals taxes, cause they do now and then. Tax fuel and you encourage us to wean ourselves off imported oil. Last year we did a road trip to NM for Thanksgiving and paid the $3.6x a gallon. This year we may head to Oregon and I'll try to cram the car full of Idaho gas. Filling up at $2 is nice - pumping it yourself is nicer, even if OR is a few cents cheaper. :shades: The gas price makes it a bit easier to decide whether to go or not, but isn't the biggest factor.

"At what speed? My highway driving in the south/mid west meant 75 mph with the AC on. " It was at 68 - 73 MPH as I recall, that was a long time ago! My highway trips were between LA and Albuquerque, so my A/C was running as well. The speed depended upon the state - Arizona has the highest speed limits, but I believe that CA and NM had 65 MPH at the time, so I drove 68 in those states. I had the limited slip rear end as well, which I believe actually reduces MPG. Keep in mind that I had the 5 speed, and the fifth speed is basically an overdrive. NOT an automatic...
