Getting the runaround
by tkrott on Mon Dec 01 11:24:20 PST 2008
I took my Taco off the road in Dec of 07, rearend rusted out and the gear lube ran right out on the ground. I have owned the vehicle since 1999! I planned on replacing the rearend in the summer months and reregistering the vehicle. I received my letter in the summer about the frame recall. The truck was not drivable do to the rearend problem. I figured there wasn't much I could do about buyback as the truck was no longer registered. A few months ago I was told by a toyota service man, that the truck did not have to be currently registered to qualify for the buyback. I called service at Edmunds and they said they would come and get the truck insp the frame and submit the info to Toyota. They came and got it a month ago and I have been getting the run around from Toyota every since!!! First from Isg, they wanted a copy of my current registration, I explained to them I do not have it currently registered, because I took it off the road due to the rearend problem, They then said I needed a copy of the failed PA insp report. I can't get the vehicle insp, as it is no longer registered! I then called Toyota and complained that I was getting no where with ISG, I was assigned a case number and have been playing phone tag with the case manager for two weeks!!! Finally got to talk to her today, and the same basic runaround, they want a current reg or a failed Pa. insp report. I am not about to reinsure a vehicle I cannot drive, just to get a temp registration, so that the Toyota dealership can attemptto insp a vehicle which they have already checked out and determined that the frame was shot!!! I loved my Tacoma have owned it since 1999, but I assure you after this experiece I will NEVER own another Toyota in my life!!!!

Well, that is much different than what I have heard. I was told that they have contracts to buy a certain number of parts based on their production schedule. If what you are saying is true, then I don't see how they are in debt to some of these suppliers. Also not sure how these suppliers can stay in business without some form of guarantee from GM.

My last two used car purchases was a 1989 Buick Century (first year for the 3.3.L engine) which ai bought for $3300. Ran great for 4years. My current car which is a 2000 Oldsmobile Intrigue which I bought with 61k miles. I currently have 168k miles on it. Relatively trouble free but I must admit if I had bought it new at over $22k, I would tolerate some of the issues. You're right. There are more off lease cars available. You can get a used SUV for a song right now.... I think your situation is becoming more typical. Do i really need that new car smell or can I get by with a not so new car but be able to take the family to dinner at Chili's or Red Lobster on Friday or Saturday night?

Run my fronts around 36 with rears around 32 on both of my LTs. For years I've always ran a bit higher pressure on my front tires, if front wheel drive. Have seen a more even wear pattern on several vehicles.

In it's present form, no GM is not a viable company. I don't believe the current management can turn it around either. As i posted on the other GM news forum, they need to change their business model so that they build cars based on demand not capacity. Their current contracts with the UAW and suppliers prohibit this. Even with shutting down plants, they still are on the hook to pay the workers and suppliers for cars and trucks that are not being produced. Couple this with the rebates they need to offer to move their car, I can't see how they can make any money in the foreseeable future no matter how many cars are sold in the US. The bigger problem is the top management at GM either doesn't see this, believe what they have done is enough or realize it but feel handcuffed by their investors. Either way, the top management at GM has been a major disappointment and must go. They were unable to make this company profitable during easy credit and record sales. How the heck can they make a profit in these market conditions??? I feel bad for the workers but they also had to know that GM's business model was unsustainable. it's not like this was a mom and pop operation where only 2 or 3 people knew the condition of the company. This is a publicly traded company that has to report it's earnings every quarter. Since the second half of 2004, GM has been losing money. Everyone knows that at some point the reserves are going to run, don't they? If, When, GM declares bankruptcy, the UAW has to shoulder some of the blame although management should never agree to labor contracts they know they can't pay.
