"As to your other point about the cost of labor, you simply have no idea of what you're talking about. With the current $ vs JY exchange rate the US labor costs are among the lowest among the developed countries. " I'm not necessarily talking about them moving back to Japan, but what about India??? China??? South America??? With all the "billions" that Sony, Panasonic, Samsung, etc. make IN THIS COUNTRY, why aren't they made here??? BECAUSE THEY HAVE NO INCENTIVE TO DO SO. Greed: When the Big 3 are gone, the only incentive others will have is to go with the lowest bidder, no matter where in the world that is.

So, is it right that they sit on that money??? Maybe another way to have the government handle this is to tell the banks we'll guarantee their debt, but seeing as how you guys have the trillion or so in cash, heres the rules: 1) Restructure their debt into 30 yr bonds at say, 8.5% 2) No payments or interest accrual for 24 months 3) We get 3% Seeing as how the Big 3 are in Dire straits, here's YOUR rules: 1) Car Czar will be appointed to oversee compliance with agreements w/ gov't (see below) 2) Executive pay limited for life of this agreement (30 years???) 3) No Jobs bank 4) Czar will have final say on labor agreements 5) Preferred stock equvallent to 7.5% of company given to Government as collateral This way, the Big 3 get relief, get the $25 billion for retooling that has already been passed, but no extra money changes hands.

"....and it would seem that the Big 3 aggravated them enough by not addressing their concerns, so they are going elsewhere in ever-increasing numbers..." But is that the biggest reason?? How many young buyers out there are "2nd generation" import buyers, meaning they, now in their mid 20's, just go out and buy what their parents have been buying for years, or the tuner crowd. I also have another theory. A shift in immigration from Europe to Asia/ S. America. Years back, immigrants seemed to want to embrace EVERYTHING American, and that included buying American cars. Now, I see them demanding we speak THEIR language, embracing THEIR culture, and driving what they drove back home. I do agree with your premise, but is it now the biggest reason. We have a saying in our Bocce league: "Crumbs make bread". SO I think that there is alot of issues that conspire in the downturn in the Big 3 (More choices than ever before is another).

" I also realize that my field is also subject to price competition, and we don't like it either...but we are at least smart enough to acknowledge it exists and we have to compete to win... " I'm sorry Bob, but I'll have to partially disagree with you. I'ts one thing to have an AMERICAN LAWYER doing RE closings for less than you (or the $150 divorces), but someone in India doing legal work (I don't care how sublime it is) somehow is just plain WRONG. I mean, if they miss something YOU are still liable, as you would sign off on their work (not to say an American can't mess up). I get the whole "global economy" thing, but I just have a problem w/ us being the world's caretaker when they won't take care of their own, and we haven't taken care of our own.

I believe it is for healthcare only. Not sure about pension monies, but that would be PBGC's problem if they went belly up. The $11 billion for VEBA, not sure if thats included in cash on hand, debt, or already been paid.

Bob, I can't say my sample is any different. Now, I don't keep my cars for 20 years, but my '88 Regal was ok for 14 years (biggest problem was them damned rear capilers), with some small bugaboos, '94 Astro, 2.5 yrs of trouble free driving, '91 GMC pu, 9 yrs, 2 starters ($50 ea) an alt. ($125) and a shock bracket and gas tank (too much sand got in between it and the plastic housing, and wore a hole) '98 Jimmy, 5 years (rear latch) '99 Ultra 6.5 yrs and counting,( door handle, seat belt latch, MAF sensor) '04 Rainier, 5 yrs and counting, ( ps rack replaced under warranty, heated seat element, and 1 broken piece of trim) Trouble free??? No. But nothing major, and nothing that would make me say "never again", and the $600 in tires I put on the Ultra 3 months ago is more than I've ever spent on a repair on any of them. BTW, if lemko ever saw them he'd cry at how filthy they are, and none of them were ever garaged...
